The Consortium for the “Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio” was founded in December 2009 by a large group of small entrepreneurs believing that the territory represents true wealth, their own and that of future generations.

The Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) has been attributed to the “Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio”, pursuant to EC Reg. N. 510/06, with Regulation no. 1238 of 11.12.09 (published in the OJEU of 17.12.09).

The summary sheet was published in the OJEU C111 of 15th May 2009. Registration in the national register of protected designations and geographical indications took place with ministerial provision of 18.12.09, published in the Official Gazette no. 2 of 4.01.10, together with the Production Regulations.

The activities of the Consortium for the Pomodorino del Piennolo DOP

Regardless of the compliance with and respect of legal regulations, the Consortium intends to act as a voluntary and supportive association body, where the aim is to protect the common good represented by the territory and the denomination of origin connected to it, with a far-sighted vision that intends to invest in the future and care for the different communities, subordinating every interest of the individual to it, when it is in conflict with the common good.

The Consortium, therefore, intends to have a specific role in the enhancement and promotion processes and does so through the following actions:

  1. Promote the application of the Regulations and propose any changes or implementations to the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, as well as promote the improvement of the qualitative characteristics of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP;
  2. Define programmes containing structural and technical adaptation measures aimed at improving the quality of production in terms of food safety and hygiene, as well as chemical, physical, organoleptic and nutritional characteristics of the marketed product;
  3. Protect, promote, enhance and take care of the general interests of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP also through consumer information;
  4. Make proposals for regulatory discipline, also to implement the procedural guidelines, and carry out advisory tasks relating to the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP;
  5. Promote interprofessional agreements in accordance with the terms of this Statute and, possibly, implementation plans of the provisions referred to in art. 15 of the Legislative Decree no.102 of 27 May 2005 and the following changes;
  6. Establish, hold and use the Consortium trademark for all the purposes envisaged by this Statute, subject to approval by the MIPAAF;
  7. Achieve and carry out the supervisory role, as a body authorised by the competent State Administrations with the execution of all the functions related to the role, in accordance with the procedures established by the current legislation;
  8. Protect, defend, even in court, in Italy and abroad, and ensure that the words “Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio”, the consortium trademark (if adopted), the distinctive sign of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP, the mark and any other symbol or wording that identifies it are not used illegitimately or illegally by anyone or to mislead the buyer or consumer;
  9. Expand the knowledge and dissemination of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP in Italy and abroad, as well as its quality characteristics, by carrying out special promotion and information work everywhere, including in relation to its supply chain;
  10. Make the choice of the authorised private control body among those designated pursuant to art. 36 of Regulation (EC) 1151/2012;
  11. Collaborate in the supervisory activity with the former Central Inspectorate for Repression of Fraud, now Central Inspectorate for the protection of quality and fraud prevention of agri-food products, pursuant to the Ministerial Decree of 12 October 2000, with which, in accordance with the provisions of Article 14 paragraph 15 letter d) of Law 526/1999, directives were given for the collaboration of the Consortia for the protection of DOP and IGP;
  12. Request benefits provided by the Region, the State and the EU.

In addition, the Consortium, within the scope of the statutory purposes, carries out the following activities in the interest of the Consortium members:

  1. It also favours and directly adheres to initiatives aimed at encouraging sales and exports by Consortium members who contribute to the affirmation of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP;
  2. It supports the Consortium members in the constant improvement of the production result, providing information, directives, technical and scientific assistance;
  3. It assists the shareholders in any matter of common interest;
  4. It promotes agreements between the Consortium members aimed at enhancing the production of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP or to increase its reputation and knowledge;
  5. It undertakes any initiatives in the collective interest of the Consortium members.
